Landfill Leachate Digestate: The Real Challenge Begins After Anaerobic Digestion

In the environmental protection industry, landfill leachate is often known as the “king of wastewater.” It is characterized by complex composition, high pollutant concentrations, heavy oil and grease content, high suspended solids (SS), and significant fluctuations in water quality and flow rate. A weak link at any stage of treatment can affect the performance of the entire process.

At a comprehensive waste treatment industrial park, landfill leachate is typically treated by anaerobic digestion to produce biogas. After three-phase separation, the resulting effluent is known as landfill leachate digestate.

However, passing through anaerobic digestion does not mean the treatment challenge is over.

Residual oil, grease, and suspended solids (SS) can still remain at significant levels in the digestate. If they are not effectively removed during pretreatment, they can increase the load on downstream biological treatment systems and may even cause fouling and clogging of membrane components in advanced treatment processes.

In this treatment process, landfill leachate first enters an anaerobic reactor for biogas production and three-phase separation.

The resulting digestate then enters the Yosun DAF System for pretreatment, where residual oil, grease, and suspended solids are effectively removed. This helps reduce the burden on downstream treatment units and provides more stable operating conditions for subsequent processes.

On-Site Operation: Clear Float Layer and Fine Microbubbles

Since commissioning, the equipment has maintained stable operation.

Inside the flotation tank, fine microbubbles attach to residual oil, grease, and suspended solids in the digestate and efficiently lift them to the water surface. A clear and dense float layer forms and is continuously removed by the sludge scraping system.

The flotation tank operates with strong and controlled upward movement, without excessive turbulence or re-mixing.

This is a clear indication of effective Dissolved Air Flotation operation.

The landfill leachate digestate, with its residual oil and high SS content, undergoes efficient oil-water and solid-liquid separation inside the Yosun DAF System.

On site, the operators collected two bottles of water—one from the DAF influent and the other from the DAF effluent—and placed them side by side.
