Wastewater treatment has long been a major environmental challenge for the plastic recycling industry. Wastewater generated during plastic pellet production contains large amounts of suspended solids, sand, plastic fragments, and oily substances. If pretreatment is inadequate, it can affect the performance of downstream biological treatment systems and directly impact a company's ability to meet wastewater discharge standards consistently.
Recently, the Lamella Clarifier supplied by Yosun Environmental for a plastic pellet manufacturer in East China successfully completed installation and commissioning and was put into operation. The equipment is primarily used for pretreating wastewater from plastic pellet production, helping address the company's long-standing challenges, including high suspended solids concentrations, low sedimentation efficiency, and limited available floor space.
Wastewater from plastic pellet production mainly comes from crushing and washing, extrusion cooling, pelletizing, and pellet cutting processes. It typically has the following characteristics:
High Suspended Solids Content: The wastewater contains large quantities of fine plastic particles, sand, and other debris, with significant fluctuations in SS concentration.
Poor Settling Performance: Some plastic particles have a density close to that of water, resulting in very slow natural settling. Conventional sedimentation tanks may struggle to separate them efficiently.
Significant Flow Fluctuations: Changes in production shifts can cause uneven wastewater discharge, placing additional stress on the treatment system.
Limited Available Space: The plant has insufficient space for conventional sedimentation tanks with a large footprint.
The company previously used a simple sedimentation tank for pretreatment. However, it experienced high suspended solids concentrations in the effluent, frequent sludge removal, and high labor costs for manual sludge cleaning.
The company therefore needed a pretreatment solution that offered a compact footprint, high sedimentation efficiency, and stable operation.
Based on the wastewater characteristics and site conditions, the Yosun Environmental technical team conducted an on-site assessment and process evaluation. After reviewing the available options, the team selected a Lamella Clarifier with inclined plates as the core pretreatment equipment.
A Lamella Clarifier uses a specially designed inclined plate structure to create multiple shallow settling zones within the tank, significantly increasing the effective settling area.
After wastewater is evenly distributed into the inclined plate section, suspended particles settle onto the plate surfaces and slide downward. The clarified water flows upward through the spaces between the plates and exits through the water collection system at the top.
The settled sludge slides into the sludge collection hopper at the bottom under gravity and is discharged periodically.
1. High Sedimentation Efficiency
The inclined plate structure significantly shortens the settling distance required for suspended particles, reducing the time needed for sedimentation. It also provides effective removal of fine suspended solids with relatively poor settling characteristics, such as those found in plastic pellet production wastewater.
2. Compact Footprint
Under the same treatment capacity, a Lamella Clarifier occupies only one-fifth to one-third of the floor space required by a conventional horizontal-flow sedimentation tank.
This advantage is particularly important for the project because of the company's limited available space.
3. Stable Effluent Quality
Actual operating data show that the SS concentration in the clarifier effluent remains consistently below 30 mg/L. This effectively reduces the load on downstream biological treatment systems and provides reliable support for meeting overall wastewater discharge requirements.
4. Easy Operation and Maintenance
The sludge discharge system is designed to allow sludge to slide into the collection hopper automatically, reducing the need for manual intervention.
Routine operation mainly involves periodic sludge discharge and equipment inspections, significantly reducing maintenance workload.
Since being commissioned, the Lamella Clarifier has continuously treated wastewater from plastic pellet production, demonstrating good adaptability and reliable performance.
Treatment performance
Even when influent SS concentrations fluctuate considerably, the effluent remains stable, with a significant improvement in suspended solids removal. This provides better influent conditions for downstream biological treatment.
Operating costs
The equipment offers a high level of automation and does not require frequent manual sludge cleaning. Chemical consumption is low, and overall operating costs have decreased noticeably compared with the company's previous simple sedimentation tank.
Space utilization
The compact equipment structure makes effective use of the limited available space within the plant without taking up additional production area.
The company's representative commented:
"Yosun Environmental's Lamella Clarifier has a compact footprint and delivers stable treatment performance. It has solved a long-standing problem in our pretreatment process, and we plan to continue using its equipment for future expansion projects."
Pretreatment of plastic pellet production wastewater is just one of the many applications of Lamella Clarifiers.
Thanks to their high efficiency, compact design, and stable performance, these systems are also well suited to the following applications:
Surface Treatment Wastewater: Solid-liquid separation in electroplating, oxidation, and spray coating processes.
Textile and Dyeing Wastewater: Pretreatment of wastewater from desizing, dyeing, and printing processes.
Food Processing Wastewater: Primary sedimentation of organic wastewater with high suspended solids content.
Landfill Leachate: Pretreatment of wastewater containing high concentrations of suspended solids.
Municipal Wastewater Treatment Upgrades: Capacity expansion and treatment standard upgrades where land is limited.
Reclaimed Water Reuse Systems: Efficient pretreatment before membrane treatment.
For projects with limited land resources and demanding treatment requirements, a Lamella Clarifier is an ideal alternative to conventional sedimentation tanks.
