In early May, the warm and pleasant weather welcomed the delegation in Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy. On May 11, local time, the “Visit to IFAT Munich 2026 & European Green Eco-Environmental Industry Study Tour” organized by the Suzhou Environmental Protection Industry Association arrived at its fifth stop – the headquarters of CRI-MAN in Correggio, Reggio Emilia province, Italy.
Founded in 2000 by the Massari family, CRI-MAN has been deeply engaged in slurry management and wastewater treatment for over 25 years. It has now become a global leader in slurry management, biogas engineering, and municipal solutions. In 2025, CRI-MAN officially joined the Atlas Copco Group, further expanding its strategic footprint in the global green technology sector.
Upon arriving at CRI-MAN’s headquarters, the delegation first gathered in the conference room to listen to technical presentations. CRI-MAN’s business covers three major segments: livestock manure treatment equipment, biogas power generation equipment, and civil/industrial wastewater treatment equipment. Its product lines include cutting pumps, mixers, solid‑liquid separators, and Biocell biological units.
During the technical session, CRI-MAN’s experts highlighted the advantages of their flagship products. The PTS submersible cutting pump features a dual‑cutting system design that efficiently handles livestock manure containing fibers, hair, and other solids without clogging. The TBM submersible horizontal mixer is specially designed for uniform mixing in pre‑storage tanks, ensuring stable slurry composition and providing a good foundation for downstream separation. The SM series screw press separator is the core solid‑liquid separation device. Using a screen‑type screw press process, it efficiently separates manure into solid and liquid fractions, achieving a dry matter content of over 35% in the solid fraction.
The technical team also introduced CFD‑based (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation services – capable of accurately simulating the flow patterns generated by CRI-MAN mixers inside a customer’s tank to help optimise process design. CRI-MAN is certified under ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management), and over 95% of its product components are recyclable.
After the technical exchange, the delegation visited a CRI-MAN demonstration project – a modern farm integrating biogas power generation and ecological livestock farming. At this farm, livestock manure is first homogenised using TR series mixers and PTS cutting pumps, then sent to the solid‑liquid separation system. The solid fraction enters the biogas digester for anaerobic fermentation to produce biogas, which is used for power generation and fed into the grid. The liquid fraction, rich in mineral nutrients, can be directly returned to the fields as liquid fertiliser.
With the rapid expansion of the global biomethane market, several biomethane plants are already operating in the Cremona area of Italy alone. The energy utilisation of agricultural waste has become an important path for Europe’s green transition. CRI-MAN plays a key technical support role in this process, with its equipment widely used in large and medium‑sized biogas projects across Europe.
The delegation also toured CRI-MAN’s production workshop, observing the manufacturing process up close. The factory strictly follows a modern production management system, with clear quality control checkpoints at every step. Workers focus on their respective tasks – from cutting, welding, and assembly to final testing – and every piece of equipment undergoes rigorous quality inspection before leaving the factory.
CRI-MAN has installed over 75,000 units worldwide, selling 5,000 machines and 85,000 spare parts annually, supported by a professional team of 90 people. Behind these numbers is CRI-MAN’s consistent commitment to reliability, flexibility, robustness, and durability. All CRI-MAN products are designed and manufactured at its Correggio facility, ensuring consistent processes and high quality from the source.
A highlight of this visit was CRI-MAN’s disruptive innovation in cattle manure valorisation – the HBC (Hygienizing BioCell) technology.
Under traditional models, the solid fraction from cow manure separation is usually used as compost. However, with the HBC biological unit, CRI-MAN has opened a completely new valorisation path: the solid fraction from manure separation is processed through aerobic biological drying to produce safe, hygienic, and comfortable cow bedding – significantly reducing the farm’s cost of purchasing bedding materials and, more importantly, achieving a “closed‑loop” resource utilisation of manure.
The core principle of HBC is based on aerobic biodegradation: in the presence of oxygen, organic matter in the manure undergoes aerobic fermentation, which is highly exothermic. The material is kept at 70°C for at least 60 minutes, achieving full pasteurisation. The final bedding product has a dry matter content of 55‑60%, is hygienic and safe, soft and comfortable, providing an excellent resting environment for dairy cows. The HBC system is equipped with comprehensive electronic monitoring and remote control, allowing operators to view real‑time data via mobile phone or computer, ensuring the entire pasteurisation process is fully controlled.
From solid‑liquid separation to biogas power generation, and then to high‑value bedding output – CRI-MAN has achieved a complete closed loop of cattle manure valorisation with its HBC technology. Farms no longer need to purchase wood chips or sand for bedding; instead, they “produce their own” – greatly reducing operating costs and truly turning waste into treasure.
